Medical Caricatures from 1736-1932 at Lowcountry Digital Library. Other than the fact that the guy has gout, I’d say the second illustration here is just for the risqué.

The boundless depths of Chris Mullen’s VTS site continue to yield treasures. The documentation for these pictures is somewhat vague but they seem to be illustrations for Fantômas stories which Mullen has grouped under the title The Dark Ledger, pa…

You can read a thorough summary of the famous 1929 play — not originally intended for children! — at SovLit. (And here are some fascinating images from the first staging.) The title of this post quotes from Max Hayward’s translation of the play (see The Bedbug and Selected Poetry).

I had major help for this fourth post of Polish book covers: I pulled some from the book collection of my friends at hipopotam and some from a Polish antiquarian bookstore found by Peacay at BibliOdyssey [see his twitter feed]. The rest were found at various online Polish bookstores.
I’ll be doing a lot more features with hipopotam this year.
Hover over each image for more information (though for many of the images I do not have more info).

I saw this concept art by mid-century animation designer Mary Blair on the wall at Illustration House the other day, and I was blown away by its jewel-like beauty. The colours really are as lovely as the jpg shows. According to the catalogu…
